It would be a few days later that Qing Yang got a text
asking him to go meet her. It was quite late and he just closed the coffee
shop.
It wasn’t warm and he worries that something was wrong.
Hurrying over, he spotted a familiar back pack and figure that was sitting on
the bench.
Approaching
from behind he calls, “What’s wrong?”
Na
Na look at him nervously, “You are here.” She looks like she was struggling
with what she wanted to tell him, worried he listens carefully, “Well I would
like to say…please go to a hotel with me to book a room.”
Qing
Yang thought he misheard, she can’t mean, “Huh?” He rub his neck nervously, Na
Na the behavior wasn’t that sort.
Na
Na protested and her cheeks turned red, “I don’t mean that. I mean to say, I
need to ask you to come with me to a hotel and register for a room….the room
that I want to book.” She was almost in a full blown panic.
Qing
Yang couldn’t understand why she wasn’t staying in her rented place, did she
get kicked out? He asked carefully, “Why are you staying at a hotel?”
Na
Na said looking down, “Because the water pipes at the top of our house are
leaking. So, our entire house is flooded. I wanted to first stay in a hotel for
a couple of days.” She said in a small voice humiliated and embarrassed,
“Because I’m afraid of being alone.”
Qing
Yang understands since she didn’t have any family anymore and she was a girl.
Na
Na continued, “I wanted to ask you to come with me.” She then started to panic,
“If it’s not convenient for you, it’s okay. I can think of another way myself.”
Unable
to turn her away, since he keeps serious to his promise that they were family
he already started to think of a solution for her. Nodding his head he said,
“You can go there.”
“Huh?
“ Na Na look confused, it seems his conversation he was having with himself
didn’t come out.
Qing
Yang corrected that mishap, “There is an empty room on the second floor of the
café.” He offered it since it wasn’t really being used for much. The coffee
shop had a study and his uncle room, sometimes he would have guest overs and
they would stay in that empty room.
“Really?”
Na Na looked grateful that she wouldn’t have to spend money and be alone all by
herself.
Qing
Yang nods, explaining, “It’s not good for a girl to stay at a hotel alone.
Furthermore, it’s dangerous. And it’s costly as well.” He already knew she
wasn’t quite well off, her mother’s illness and her own most of cost a
lot.
Even
with Taiwan insurance there was a payment that needed to be monthly at around
fifteen or thirty United States dollars. Even though they had a form of
national health and it wasn’t too bad, there still were red packets needed to
be given to the physicians for their care.
(Note:
I am not really sure on the health care stuff, I just recall some people
telling me about it.)
Na
Na said, “This is great. Thank you. Actually, it’s fine as long as I have a
place to stay. Even if I have to sleep on the floor, it’s no problem.” She was
relaxed and already Qing Yang thought it was a good idea he also had a lock on
his door, but he doubt she was that sort.
Qing
Yang said, “Let’s go. “ He walked a few steps away and look back to see if she
would follow.
Watching
her get up then suddenly collapse on the bench, he quickly ran forward alarmed,
“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
Seeing
Na Na struggle she said quickly, “I’m fine. Ever since I had the surgery, I
became anemic. It should be because I just stood up too quickly.”
Qing
Yang soften slowly, she really did try to reassure others so that they won’t
worry.
“So
my head is a little dizzy. It’s no problem. I’m truly fine, don’t worry.” Na Na
kept on going on.
Qing
Yang slowly kneel down in front of her seeing her look confused, “Get on.”
“Huh?”
Na Na look at his back confused.
Qing
Yang turns and said, “Last time when I carried you to the hospital, I was tired
to death.” It was true she was like a limp noodle that time; it was hard not to
drop her. “At least now that you’re
awake, you should feel a lot lighter than before. If I use piggy back then it
should be easier. Get on.” He teases her a bit, but he knew she would appreciate
the thought. No woman enjoys being called heavy.
Turning
his back again, Qing Yang said, “Get on.”
Na
Na slid on her back pack and wrap her arms around his shoulders, “Then I’ll get
on. “
Qing
Yang feeling the hug of heat on his back said, “Let’s go.” A few steps away
concerned he asked, “Do you still feel dizzy?”
“A
bit.” Na Na said her heat was a nice comfort for her, the breath behind him
spoke of her life, and her voice was soft in his ear, “Wei Qing Yang.”
Qing
Yang echoes, “What.”
Na
Na continued, “This kind of feeling is very good.”
“Why
do you say that?” Qing Yang grew curious.
Na
Na hums, “When I was young, my mom would carry me on her back. It gave me a
sense of safety and warmth. It has been a long time since I had that feeling.”
Qing
Yang could see the appeal, when he was young his parents carried him on their
backs, even rock him back and forth. Na Na in his observation was saying she
felt safe with him. Qing Yang smiles and carried her on, they finally reached
the coffee shop and he was tiring. Setting her down, Qing Yang grabs her
shoulder to steady her. “Come…I’ll get you something to drink first before I
take you to the extra room.”
“Thank
you and sorry about this, “Na Na settled herself onto the black leather couch,
she seems to like near the window. She watches him bustle around the bar
preparing her a drink, once done he came over and settled a frothy milky white
drink.
It
still steaming, “I am not making coffee. Instead have warm milk.” Qing Yang
watches her slowly take a sip of the drink and smile at him.
The
side of her eyes crinkles into a smile and he relaxes. “Thanks I feel better.”
“Come.
I’ll take your back pack up.” Qing Yang picked up the white backpack and
motions, he watches as she got up carefully and went up the stairs with him one
by one. The room wasn’t used as much at most they went in to dust or clean here
and there. Most of it was used to store extra stuff they have.
Na
Na sat on the bed and nods her head when he places her stuff on the ground.
“It’s nice. Much nicer then where I stay.”
“At
least you have a bed there right?” Qing Yang asked, he never did go into her
living arena, instead walked her to her front door.
“Ah…well
I usually sleep on the couch. It’s cheaper that way.” Na Na said embarrassed,
“it’s not too bad.”
“Well
the bathroom is down the hall, and you can take a shower there.” Qing Yang
said.
Na
Na grins, “Thank you. I appreciate it.” She then waves, “Good night.”
Qing
Yang move to the door and said shyly, “Good night.”

The
week went on and Qing Yang had gotten use to the presence in the coffee house.
Mei Fang the helper wasn’t pleased by the presence of Na Na, but had gotten
over it when she talked a bit with her. Qing Yang relaxed because every morning
he would wake up and make toast or breakfast for Na Na.
Na
Na was embarrassed and would help out at the coffee house when she got back
from work. Day in and day out they were in a nice pace and Qing Yang felt very
comfortable with her presence.
She
wasn’t really as troublesome as he imaged, she didn’t even remotely bother him
just sitting and watching him or begging him for coffee. He never felt this way
before, being beside someone just accompany them without talking.
Qing
Yang liked it a lot. Then Friday rolled along and he recalls his outing with Zi
Feng and Ya Nuo. Already, Zi Feng had text him about the surprise guests they
would be gaining. Du Zi Han and the Du family chauffer, Liao Guang Chao, he
knew it was going to get noisy again.
However,
the happy smile on Na Na face stilled his hand on wanting to cancel. It just
means he have to put up with the noisy people in the group. Grabbing his stuff
and what he need for the hiking and camping trip, he knocked on Na Na door.
Na
Na opens her door and gave a bright smile, “Qing Yang.”
“I
came by to tell you we need to pack the hiking stuff we need.” Qing Yang gave a
concern look over her weak body frame. “I could carry your amount of stuff, but
a few of your personal affects you might want to have on you.” His cheeks turned
red.
Na
Na gave a nod she look curious when Qing Yang handed her a paper list. “This is
the guide lines on how to hike. Also any medicine you might want to give to me
in case you get sick.”
Shaking
her head, Na Na said, “it’s alright don’t worry too much about me. I will look
over the list and prepare the items.” She peers up at Qing Yang, “If I have
questions I will ask you.”
Qing
Yang nods his head in agreement.
Na
Na pouts her lips, “Though…” She trails on, “If you can bring some of your
magic coffee to make for me at the camping trip it would be good.”
“Coffee
again…” Qing Yang said.
Na
Na pouts, “Hey…I really like your coffee.”
“I
will think about it.” Qing Yang considered the amount he would have to bring to
brew a good amount for her, but he didn’t want to take his kit with him. It
would shatter and he wasn’t kin on it being destroyed by accident during the
hike.
The
next day rolled in quickly and Qing Yang was helping to bring down Na Na and
his own gear. He had driven his own car around to the front of the store prior.
“Na Na comes on…we have to meet them there early.”
Na
Na called down from her room, “I will be down soon!”
The
drive was relaxing the windows were slightly rolled down and he could tell Na
Na eyes linger on the scenic route he took. She breathes in the air and her
cheeks had color compare to before. Qing Yang watches the road but would glance
over. Na Na had fallen asleep and her head was nodding, giving a grin he
continued to drive to the parking lot for the hike trail. It was about a forty
minute drive, but they made perfect time. The sun was near noon and quite warm.
Lots
of Giant Cane and vegetation surrounded the area and he noted Zi Feng’s car in
the distance. Shaking Na Na gently he called out, “Na Na….Na Na…wake up.”
Na
Na opens her eyes and looked around yawning softly, “Sorry I fell asleep.”
“You
didn’t sleep well last night?” Qing Yang asked.
Na
Na gave a guilty look like a kid that got caught; one thing Qing Yang knew was
that Na Na was a terrible liar. “Yeah…I was too excited.”
“Don’t
overdo it.” Qing Yang said he opened his door, Na Na copies and they went to
the back of the car. Qing Yang helped Na Na with her gray color hiking bag,
whereas he set on his orange hiking bag. He was glad her bag wasn’t too heavy,
but he made a note to take on more on their way back. “Come on. They are
already there…”
Na
Na eyes sparkles at seeing the familiar people as she walked faster and closer
calling out. “General Manager, Brother Nuo. We’re here.”
Qing
Yang enjoyed that Na Na was close enough to call the other two familiar though Zi
Feng required more work in his opinion.
Zi Feng gave a knowing look at Qing Yang
stated with bravo, “Okay, since everyone is here, let’s get ready to set off.”
The
sound of Zi Han’s voice saying, “Nuo Nuo, let’s go!” Wasn’t hard for Qing Yang
to hear and he inwardly sighs.
Qing
Yang tugs Na Na along the way to the hiking route and started to walk up. He
could tell Na Na listening to the noise in the back and glancing over, curiously.
Qing Yang kept on checking on Na Na, “Are you okay?” He didn’t know if she had
ever gone on hiking and being sick with anemia he didn’t want her to faint.
Medical help wasn’t close in this place, “You must tell me if you are unwell.”
“Don’t
worry. I’m very happy today. When I’m happy, I have a lot of strength. There
won’t be any problems.” Na Na pants but gave a reassuring smile to Qing Yang.
She really was enjoying herself.
Qing
Yang echoes, “That’s good then.”
Na
Na’s eyes twinkle with mischief, “But…if I could drink your black coffee, it
would be even more perfect.”
Again
with the coffee! Qing Yang wasn’t sure to be pleased or to tease her, “I will
think about it.”
Na
Na made a disappointed sound, “My little sun has been blocked by dark clouds
today. His not warm at all.” She quickens her pace up the hiking trail.
Ya
Nuo suddenly appear form behind them then before them to Zi Feng. Zi Feng
teases Ya Nuo, “So couldn’t keep away?”
Na
Na gave a bright smile and giggles when Ya Nuo said apathetically, “No…I just
wanted to get ahead of you, because I am competitive.”
Qing
Yang gave a smile and glances to Na Na whom echoed the same look. Na Na’s eyes
lingered on the tall perennial from the giant canes as they passed by and
seeing her wistful look he reached over and snapped a few to hand over to her. Na
Na’s eyes gleam with happiness stroking the furry portions of the stems and
giggling.
“Thank
you.” Na Na said, “For the Arundo donax.” Qing Yang felt pleased and surprise
that she knew even a remote species name. However, in Taiwan these giant canes
also a form of reed in basket making, to instrument creation. Were only
abundances in certain areas it also could be used as a biofuel and consider
environmental grass.
They
weren’t making bad time to the camping ground and he estimate it should be
pretty soon. The noise in the back gotten louder drawing Na Na attention that
Qing Yang stopped.
Guang
Chao voice shrieks from behind them, “Miss Zi Han, be careful! Sit here. Miss
Zi Han. Are you okay? Ah NUO!!!! Miss Zi Han, she…”
Qing
Yang admires Yan Nuo’s running ability; he sprinted down the hill already
kneeling down to check on Zi Hang. “What’s wrong?” Ya Nuo said.
Na
Na walked down worried and Qing Yang followed, they took a look at the girl. Qing
Yang knew that Zi Han was a high maintenance kind of girl; she wasn’t use to
rough situations or accommodations. Coming here, she most likely wasn’t
prepared, and with Zi Feng he probably was carrying quite a load, since his
sister wasn’t quite useful.
Zi
Han read out like a robot, “My blood sugar is too low. I’m very dizzy.”
Ya
Nuo repeated, “Low blood sugar?”
“Ah
Nuo, don’t you have cough drops? Quick, take them out.” Guang Chao said with excitement. Qing Yang
couldn’t understand where the man gets his energy to talk.
Ya
Nuo look confused, “What cough drops?”
Guang
Chao pointed at Ya Nuo’s bag, “Those cough drops in the metal case on your
desk.”
Na
Na felt around her pockets already searching. Qing Yang registered Ya Nuo’s
angry voice which wasn’t quite normal.
Ya
Nuo hisses, “Why did you bring it out?”
Guang
Chao was insistent, “What do you mean by why? Just take it out for now and give
it to Miss Zi Han!”
Na
Na sensing the tension and how Brother Nuo didn’t want to rummage in his bag,
said in a loud voice interrupting, “It’s okay, I have some candies here.” She
grabs a packet of gumballs from inside her hiking bag pocket. She stuffed the
candies into Zi Han’s hand.
Ya
Nuo commentary of using the bathroom didn’t earn any attention, but Qing Yang
didn’t know what else to say. A few feet they hiked upward they headed to the
camp zone. It wasn’t a bad spot flat and cleared for them to set up their
tents. Qing Yang helped Na Na off with her backpack and eases it down he made
plans to unzip the tents from his and her bag.
Qing
Yang shook his head observing Na Na standing beside Zi Han, while Zi Han
continued to talk to Guang Chao to fan her. “Use more strength. Didn’t you eat
anything?
Zi Feng the designated leader as it were started to give out directions. “Let’s make arrangement. We have four tents.” Four because Qing Yang, Zi Feng, Ya Nuo and Na Na had their check list and had prepared their part, the only two that didn’t have their own tent was Guang Chao and Zi Han. “The girls will sleep together whereas the guys…”
“I’ll
sleep with Ah Chao. You two can split the other two.” Ya Nuo volunteered.
Zi
Feng and Qing Yang looked at one another. Qing Yang also could tell his best
friend feeling puzzled as to why Ya Nuo wouldn’t share a tent with Zi Feng.
They had on the cruise before slept beside one another in bed prior, as Zi Feng
told his best friend practically everything during their men’s talk day.
Zi
Han’s whined. Whereas Guang Chao was narrowing his eyes on Ya Nuo, indeed this
would be a drama, Qing Yang thought.
Ya
Nuo face became darker, “What? You’re not willing?”
Unable
to protest Guang Chao said slowly, “No, how could I not agree? It’s my honor to
sleep with Brother Nuo. I am very—“
Zi
Han cleared her throat.
While
Guang Chao went back to fanning, “Willing to…” He squeaks.
Qing
Yang lips quirked at Guang Chao’s antics, the man is very funny, but he didn’t
want to stay too long with him.
Zi
Feng said, “Okay. Since there are no problems, let’s split the tasks. Ya Nuo
and I will look for firework.” Qing Yang already knew that Zi Feng wanted to be
closer to Ya Nuo so it was no surprise there. “Qing Yang and Na Na will…set up
the tents. Guang Chao and Zi Han will help arrange the bags and prepare the
food.
Qing
Yang began to set the pikes into place on the floor to ensure the tents didn’t
fly off. Na Na was already fitting together the plastic and steel tubes shaking
up the tents. Qing Yang asked, “Do you need help?”
Na
Na said, “I am fine…don’t you remember? I am use to different jobs.” She said.
“That’s
true…let me know if you need a rest though.” Qing Yang finish setting up the
bottom started to put together poles too.
Zi
Feng came back with a pile of wood, “Qing Yang…Na Na helped start the fire. We
got the wood.”
Qing
Yang had taken over building a pit center, because Zi Han had already went into
one of the tents to change, and Guang Chao didn’t know how to make one.
Na
Na was handed a cardboard, “Just fan the fire with me after I build it up.”
Qing Yang said.
The
fire started easily, while Zi Feng complained that the food wasn’t even fixed
together. Ya Nuo and Zi Feng move to the ice chest and started to steak the
meat together. Qing Yang had set the fire grill already and had everything
ready for Zi Feng to cook the wonders of two guys with knowledge on cooking.
Na
Na fans the fire with Qing Yang both relaxed together on the bench. A rustle
from behind them, Na Na turns her head to look over her shoulder. Her eyes
widen scanning up and down Zi Han, “Why are you dressed so nice?” She asked
surprised.
Qing
Yang felt gnawing on his temple from the thought of Zi Han once again chasing a
boy. He turn his head away after looking at her continue to fanning the fire
pit, they were in a camp zone and it was frivolous to wear such pretty clothes
in such an environment.
Na
Na at least was practical and her clothes were built for comfort. He seriously
doubts he could deal with a high maintainer persona such as Zi Han.
“That’s
okay, this is my sleeping wear.” Zi Han said.
Qing
Yang wanted to smack the palm of his hand to his face for this. He tries to
ignore Zi Han’s antics and Guang Chaos exclamation’s
Na
Na’s face was all smiling from amusement. Zi Han’s tug of her dress up her
thighs, earned a bigger smile from Na Na. Qing Yang couldn’t do anything else
but drop the cardboard at such a blasted display of legs.
Zi
Han called out, “Nuo!”
The
lack of reaction was enough to snap Qing Yang out of it as he reaches for the
cardboard, but he couldn’t pick it up, instead he was pressing his face into
his hands shaking his head. This sort of tactic was just simply beyond the
scope of words. Uncle Du let alone Feng Jie would most likely faint from the
methods Zi Han was employing to ensnarl Ya Nuo.
Zi
Han was like a little sister to him. However, there were points he didn’t think
he could stand watching the oncoming train wreckage. Feeling appreciative of
the hard work that Na Na did and also a tiny bit guilty. Not to mention the
thought of all the alcohol that Zi Han had stuffed into her back pack worried
Qing Yang that Na Na would try to drink them.
Qing
Yang acknowledges he was protective of Na Na’s health. She wasn’t able to drink
that much, in fact to him coffee was consider healthier then alcohol. He made
the coffee blend with a regular cup of hot water he funneled through a filter.
It was all metal not as great as glass or even ceramic, but it was better than
nothing. Standing up with his precious brew in a tin cup, he approach Na Na and
sat beside her. “For you.”
Na
Na’s happy tone, “You really brought it. Thank you.” Drew his focus on only
her, she was bright, even though she called him, her small sun; to him she was
like the moon. “As expected, the little sun is still quite warmhearted.”
Zi
Han’s voice held a jealous tone, “Qing Yang is so thoughtful. Can you teach Ya
Nuo a little?”
Qing
Yang head lifted to stare at Zi Han, whereas Na Na was already consuming her
coffee.
Ya
Nuo stating, “No need. I can brew coffee.”
Earned
a sigh from Zi Han already unhappy that her hints weren’t sinking in, “I don’t
mean that.”
Qing
Yang finger twitches at the drama coming again. He was just glad when it was
all over and that they all broke up to get ready for bed. Qing Yang slid into
his tent and pulled out his sleeping bag and some other items. The silhouette
of Na Na walking past his tent worried him, he wonder where she was going
alone. Sliding out, he watches her go through reed patches, in a wavy motion.
Unable to help himself he follows her all the way to a single large tree that
over looked a glen.
Na
Na settled down beside the large tree and looked up at the sky. It was a
beautiful place, but Qing Yang really wanted to scold her for simply leaving
without letting anyone know. It was considered dangerous. Approaching from
behind Qing Yang said, “It’s late, why aren’t you sleeping yet?”
Pale
hands took out ear buds from her ears; Na Na turns to glance up at him, “I
didn’t mean to scare you.” Settling himself down beside her, he continued,
“It’s very dangerous for you to wander around alone.”
Na
Na looked down shameful, Qing Yang admires the view of the stars and he could
see why she would want to come out here, “Thank you for being so concerned
about me.” Both remained quiet looking at the stars. It was beautiful the city
lights in Taiwan drown out the stars most of the time, so camping trips away
from light, equal being able to see the sky at night time.
Na
Na breaks the silence, “Actually, I am thinking of my mom up there.”
Qing
Yang turns his head to look at Na Na. He lowered his eyes the melancholy that Na
Na experience was understandable.
“Have
you ever heard that after humans have become little angels, they will turn into
stars in the sky? And the place where we are standing now is the place that
brings us even closer to the stars.” Na Na soft voice lingers with sorrows but
resounded with a brightness that didn’t display any form of dejection.
Qing Yang liked hearing her voice, it was
soothing even with a pensive tone, and it was beautiful to him. He couldn’t
help but close his eyes.
“Wei
Qing Yang.”
An
offer of one ear bud connected to her cellphone, taking it, he slid it into his
ear, and a mellow male voice sang slowly, “What sort of music is this?”
Na
Na saying, “Mother’s favorite.”
All
he could do is sit beside her listening and looking at the sky, gentleness
fills him; the song was kind and soft lingering with powerful words. They sat
for an hour, before Qing Yang shook her shoulder; Na Na was leaning on him half
asleep. “Na Na…let’s get you to the tent to sleep.”
Qing
Yang tugs her up and guided her back to her tent that she would share with the
drunken Zi Han.
Fixing
her hair, he tugs down the zipper of the tent before heading to his own tent.
“Good night.”
Na
Na voice echoes like a child, “Good night, and my little sun.”
